Shade Clothing

You may remember the reviews I did on Shade clothing a while back - I'm still loving it! The pieces I tried then are still an integral part of my wardrobe. They've washed well and are basics that go with a lot of different outfits (which means great value, too!). =)

You can read all the details on why I'm such a big fan of Shade here and here. I've just previewed their Fall line and it's fantastic! I had the pleasure of trying their basic layering tank and 3/4 sleeve V-neck cardigan. I'm in love with the rusty orange of the sweater - it's a great addition to my fall wardrobe, perfect for crisp weather. And of course, their layering tank is awesome! I use it from everything to a layer under a t-shirt to part of the sweater set. Both look great and are very versatile - that's my kind of style!

Good news! Shade is having a Friends and Family sale event right now, September 24-28. You can save 30% on your order just by using the code FF0909. This great sale will be over fast, so get some goodies at awesome prices while you can! =)

Piggy Paint

Nail polish isn't an everyday thing for us, but I thought it would be a fantastically fun thing to have a mommy-daughter pedicure for Lovie's birthday. I'm sure as she gets older, this will become an even more regular thing. Even at this young age, she loved it!

Piggy Paint is completely safe and non-toxic, and it doesn't have the nasty chemicals that regular nail polishes have. I'm thrilled to have found an alternative to all that nasty stuff, that allows us to still paint our nails! =) Piggy Paint just received the SafeBaby.com Safe Alternative Product Excellence Award. It really is a great product!

Here's why I would never use regular nail polish on Lovie; in fact, I don't even use it on myself anymore. If it does this to a styrofoam plate, I don't really need to be putting it anywhere on my body, let alone hers.

I love that Piggy Paint is truly safe to use, even on the littlest ladies. We got to try both of the pinks shown on the plate in that picture - Angel Kisses and Forever Fancy. Piggy Paint comes in a wide variety of colors, so there's something to please all little girls, from tomboys to girly-girls. We also got to try the Dandelion Dance (yellow) and Twinkle Toes (silver), which were both fun for the older girls to try out.

Piggy Paint applies just like normal nail polish. The only real difference is that you blow on the painted nails with a hair dryer to set the polish. Ours wore just as well as regular polish and even withstood Lovie's nightly baths. When it is time to take the polish off, Piggy Paint makes their own remover, and again, it's much safer than regular products. It's got no acetone, it's hypoallergenic and biodegradable, and it's made from natural ingredients. And it definitely works!

I'm in love with Piggy Paint! It was founded by Melanie, a mom who wanted an alternative to the uber-nasty polishes she found in stores (even "kid-friendly" polishes were eating through styrofoam!). Piggy paint is free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone, and is made in the USA. They're also committed to giving back: they offer this cute Piggy Paint Pail and a portion of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. I really love this company!

Think about it: kids put their hands in their mouths. Especially little ones who are Lovie's age. If you put traditional nail polish on a child, it will then end up in their mouth, and thus their body. I don't want any of those chemicals being ingested by my daughter, and I'm thinking you feel the same way about your little ones! I'm all about minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals. No, we can't eradicate them, but taking small steps like this is a great way to go about cutting back on what they come into contact with.

I love Piggy Paint! Want to try it yourself?

All of the giveaways at Makes Mom Happy are entered by leaving one comment on the post for the contest you'd like to enter. Moms Rock =)

Click the image to read this...

If you're a mom, I'm sure this rings true for you.

Celebrating motherhood is important. There are plenty of shitty days, cranky days, sleepless nights, pukey clothes, poopy diapers, scraped knees, and bumped heads to get bogged down in. It's sometimes hard to keep a positive perspective when you've got a screaming, napless child, work to be done, ...you get the point. I've been there; you've been there; all moms have.

Work full-time, part-time, stay at home, work at home: Moms Rock sees no designation. This really reaches to the common bond that all moms can share and focus on, regardless of where they're at in life or how they're doing their particular brand of motherhood. It's easy for moms to get caught up in what separates us, I see it all the time. I love that this is based in what all moms do, it's something we can all relate to.

So when it comes to celebrating motherhood and focusing on all the awesome, positive parts - I'm all about it! Kim at Moms Rock Shop is doing just that. I love the cute logo, the beautiful manifesto, and her passion for what she does. She's also donating a portion of all proceeds back to women's shelters. Love that.

Yes, it was Lovie's birthday this week, but I think that calls for a little celebration of being her mom, too. =D

I got to try the fabulous pink tank top with the logo on the front and manifesto on the back. It's a wearable pick-me-up. =) You can enter to win a Moms Rock apron and hat set! Here's how:
  • Leave ONE comment on this post and let me know that you're a fan of Makes Mom Happy on Facebook. That's it! =)
Giveaway runs 9/17-10/10/09, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Sweet Funky Vintage

This is one of those reviews that is hard to start, since there's so much good stuff going on! Sweet Funky Vintage makes made-to-order clothes for little ones that are completely darling. They're also a socially conscious company that you can really feel good supporting.

Lovie got to try out a Sweet Funky Vintage dress (the Phoebe) in their too-cute Mod Bloom pattern. It's adorable! The quality is top-notch and it was impossible to tell that I'd washed it before she wore it. (I hate it when I buy something cute, wash it, and it dries all shriveled and looks too bad to even put on her...so the washing well thing earns big points with me.) I love the bright, cheery colors (and the pink and red, can't go wrong with those!).

I'm also a fan of the fact that the bodice is designed for long wear. She'll be able to wear this as a dress now; once it's too short for that, she'll be able to wear it as a shirt (it would look adorable with a white turtleneck underneath it!) Quality clothes that last more than one season - I can get into that! Sweet Funky Vintage will also monogram the clothes, which is great. Everything's better with a monogram. ;D Oh, and the dress came in a little pink pastry box with damask tissue paper...I almost didn't want to open it! I'm a sucker for pretty packaging. =)

Sweet Funky Vintage has a very cool program called Wonderfully Worn. When your little one grows out of their Sweet Funky Vintage, you can send it back in and they'll donate the items to children in need. And to thank you, they'll send you a $5 gift certificate for every item you send in, to put toward your next purchase.

They've also got a unique Birthday Program. If you sign up and register with your child's birthday, then shop and make a purchase that month, they'll make a donation to First Book. The $5 donation will buy two books for a child who needs them, plus your little one will get some Sweet Funky Vintage. I love that SFV is so committed to social responsibility! And it's owned and run by two moms - you know how I love the mompreneurs. =)

Want to win a free Morgan shirt from Sweet Funky Vintage? Here's how to enter:
Giveaway runs 9/17-10/10/09, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Stride Rite Children’s Shoes (Guest Post by Dad-O)

I was organizing the closet the other day and it suddenly occurred to me that I own a ton of shoes. Not sure how that happened, but my footwear collection is probably a little more robust than that of a lot of guys. Apparently that makes me the man for the job when it comes to writing about kid shoes.

Anyway, Babe-O doesn’t have a lot of shoes, but the ones she does have are very cool. The most recent addition to her collection is her stride rite SRT Noelles, which are a pretty rough and tumble pair of shoes. They’re leather (and evidently other materials), which makes them soft but still rugged. Babe-O is just starting to walk around with our assistance, so she hasn’t exactly run wild with the things yet, but they do help her step properly, which is a good think considering the little crooked leg thing that she has going on sometimes as she tries to crawl/cruise.
Turns out that the reason is straightens out the little hitch in her giddy-up is something called Sensory Motion Technology, which encourages good posture and proper walking. That should be good for little ones just getting up to speed as well as older kids that are starting to play sports and climb on things and all that good stuff.

What I like most about the Noelles is that they’re pretty cute, but still look like they’d stand up to leaf piles, slushy sidewalks, and other messy outdoor situations. Any anything that lets me run around and have a great time with my kid is okay by me.

Basically, if you like the look of the shoes, get them. I’d be really surprised if you weren’t happy with their construction or performance. They’re tough, durable, and much more ergonomically sound than the average kid shoe. Want to try and score a free pair? Take a stab at the giveaway, below.

Giveaway! This one is a larger giveaway Stride Rite is offering on several blogs, so you have to enter via this form (link is case sensitive): http://bit.ly/zb2Qb. Just to be clear, I have nothing to do with choosing winners or running the contest, Stride Rite is doing all of that for this one. Five winners will be chosen to each receive one pair of SRT shoes, available in sizes 3 to 8 infant/toddler (including medium and wide). Each pair is a retail value of $50! =) Giveaway runs 9/14-9/28/09, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Mini-break

(not so much the good kind...)

Just peeking in to say that I'm on a bit of a mini-hiatus. Birthday posts to resume ASAP! Poor Lovie has come down with an ear infection and a virus, so she's not a happy camper. Which means Mommy must be within 3 feet of her at all times, or we have major meltdowns. And those of you with little ones know: it's nearly impossible to do anything constructive at the computer with the kidlet in your lap (my computer is her favorite no-no toy, that doesn't help).

So - back as soon as she's feeling a bit better and I can get some work done. =) I hope you all understand (I think you probably know how this goes!)...thanks for your patience! Check out the "Giveaways" tab in the meantime to enter for some fab goodies. ;D

The Breastfeeding Celebration giveaways are rapidly winding down...let's get some more mamas to join the fun!

Tweet? FB? Follow? =)

I've gotten some questions lately about giveaways that require you to follow various folks on Twitter. In short, you need to set up a Twitter account to enter those ones. If you enter without one, I'll have to disqualify it. Signing up for Twitter is quick and painless, and a lot of my giveaways are going to incorporate it, so I recommend joining the party. Oh, and it's really fun! I've met (virtually, anyway) tons of great people. =) I love my tweeps!

One other quick note about entering the giveaways: if you have to subscribe via email to enter, you have to actually subscribe. As in, if you go and subscribe, then unsubscribe the next day, you're not going to win. I verify the subscription(s) of winners when they're picked, so if you've unsubscribed, a new winner will have to be picked. Oh, and PS: Why would you unsubscribe from all this fabulousness, anyway??? =P

I hope you're all liking the new one-comment format for the giveaways. Hopefully, it's easier for you and saves you the hassle of entering everything a handful of times. I'm really interested on your feedback on that, so let me know if you've got an opinion. =D

To make entering giveaways here really easy:
  • have a Twitter account
  • subscribe to my blog via email (the feedburner box in the sidebar)
  • follow my site with Google Friend Connect
  • be my friend on Facebook
If you've done all of those, entering giveaways will be a breeze!

And one final thing....thanks!!! MMH has been growing by leaps and bounds. There are some cool things cooking for the near future, so stay tuned... ;-)

Jamie's Painting & Design

One of the nicest touches at Lovie's big birthday celebration was a special plate for her smash cake (the smash cake is a separate, smaller cake for her to dig into with her hands and smash). It's a good thing the plate looked so nice, because I didn't stand a chance of creating a pretty cake to put on it! Betty Crocker, I'm not. =P

The plate, by Jamie's Painting & Design, is completely adorable. Her designs are hand-painted and then heat sealed (not dishwasher or microwave safe). Here's the design we got for Lovie (Bernadette is just an example from Jamie's site):

We went with a special first brithday design, but Jamie offers pretty much everything! I love the tradition of having a plate that comes out at every birthday. Seeing your baby grow and having the plate as a constant is just such a cool idea, not to mention sweet and nostalgic at every birthday. Jamie offers a wide array of designs in her Children's China line, in addition to all kinds of plaques and name tiles.

The plate we received is a nice, heavy ceramic plate (not melamine or anything like that). The hand-painting on it is neat and it washed well (by hand). I think that the plaques, door hangers, name tiles, and ornaments Jamie paints would be just as cute and well-done. Personalized, custom gifts are the best! The designs and offerings from Jamie's Painting & Design are great - want one? Of course! These would make great holiday gifts, hint-hint! ;D

Win the plate of your choice from the Children's China Collection! Here's how:
  • Leave ONE comment on this post and tell me what design you'd like if you win (choose carefully, the one you name is the one you'll get if you win! =) customization details can be hashed out with the winner, no need to list that info) AND let me know what name you use to follow both @HappyMomAmy and @jpdmom on Twitter.
Giveaway runs from 9/11-9/30/09, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Elmont!

Lovie is just crazy about Elmo. We call him Elmont around here ("Elmo+Monster"="Elmont") and she can't get enough. When I had the opportunity to review a little red Radio Flyer Wagon full of Elmo goodies from Kara Nessian, I knew she'd be tickled! The goodies in this basket are perfect for her fist birthday! Rather than try and describe it, here's a picture:

How cute is that?! The minute I saw the little red wagon, I loved it. This would make a great birthday, older sibling, or special treat for any toddler. A few of the items that came in the package will need to be put away for a bit, until Lovie is older, but on the whole, this is a fantastic bundle for the little Elmo fanatic in your life!

Here's a quick rundown of all the goodies that are packed into the Radio Flyer Wagon (it's actually a little metal version that your kiddo can pull around...so cute!):

  • Original Radio Flyer Wagon - Measures 8.2" x 13.1" x 2.5"
  • Elmo Plush by GUND - 13" Tall
  • Sesame Street Plush Albums -GUND - (Assorted - Red or Blue)
  • Sesame Street Cookie Monster photo album
  • Sesame Street Diecut Album Stickers
  • Sesame Street Frames Stickers
  • Sesame Street boxed set of four Elmo books (hardcover)
  • 100% Cotton Orange T-Shirt - 2 Sizes available - 2T or 18-24 months
  • 100% Cotton Red T-Shirt - 2 Sizes available - Size 2T or 18-24 months
  • Melissa & Doug Rainbow Stacker
  • Melissa & Doug Plush Stacking Block (one) (assorted)
  • OPTIONAL Personalized Hand-Painted Wooden Letters measure 7 inches
The only variations in ours were that it came with a red t-shirt and a white one, not an orange (we didn't do the letters, either), and it had the Big-Bird you see pictured (bonus!). Here's how it arrived:

One issue I had was that the cellophane was torn and the bow was falling off when it arrived. The bow would be an easy fix, but it would be tough to give this as a gift with the torn cellophane. Other than that little hangup, everything about this gift pack is great! It's a really carefully selected group of products.

I like that this gift has a learning bent to it. The books, the stickers, the block, and the stacking toy are all great for little ones. There's nothing obnoxious or batter-powered in this one, which I also really like (the less the toy does, the more the child does...a good thing, indeed). Everything included is also from reputable brands (Gund, Melissa & Doug, etc-) - you're getting quality stuff with these gifts.

I'm also a fan of the one-stop factor. These make impressive, comprehensive gifts with just a few clicks. They look great, are all you need for any occasion (they have a wide range of baskets, check out the selection!), and are uber convenient. I don't want to think of how long it would've taken me to pick all this out, round it up, and put it together. Awesome gifting service! Shipping is really reasonable, too.

One more thing that I think is great? Kara Nessian is owned and operated by a work-at-home mom who operates the whole thing remotely. Warehouse, employees, and she's doing it from home - that's awesome! I love supporting mompreneurs, too. (Kara Nessian also offers wholesale, if you've got a shop and you're loving this... =)

Kara Nessian is giving away TWO gift sets! One winner will receive the Dora "I'm the Big Sister!" Basket and one will get the Diego "I'm the Big Brother!" Basket. Look how cute they are!

Here's how to enter: Leave ONE comment on this post and tell me:
  • which gift set you'd prefer (once I email the winners, whoever answers first gets their first choice!)
  • what name you use to follow both @HappyMomAmy and @KaraNessian on Twitter
That's it! =) Giveaway runs 9/11-10/4/09, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Some Sugarbeez for your Sugar

Little Lovie's birthday just wouldn't have been complete with out a tutu! She's a girly-girl and she needed a fabulous outfit for her big party. Every little girl deserves to wear a tutu on her birthday, if that's how she rolls (and that's definitely how Lovie rolls!). Sugarbeez Tutus has THE perfect tutus, and at great prices!

We tried the Happy Birthday Baby tutu, shirt, & bow...SO, so, SO cute! I love the bright rainbow of colors and the tulle is very soft. These tutus are sewn, not tied, so they're also really high-quality. Lots of hard work and attention to detail goes into each one, no doubt. The tutu is like a wearable ball of cheer!

I also really like the little ribbon adornments that go around the waist - they give the tutu that extra something special and give it a feeling of whimsy. My only issue there is that I wish those were tacked on with thread, rather than hot-glued, as Lovie is very fascinated with them and has pulled a couple off! Oopsy!

The tutu came with a cute little t-shirt with Lovie's first initial appliqued on (also SO cute!) and a korker bow (tons of curled ribbons on a clip). The hot glue on the clip was no match for all that awesome ribbon, but I fixed it without a problem. Lovie thinks all that ribbon is just the best thing since sliced bread! I'm hoping she grows enough hair by the time she turns 2, to wear it (my little baldy!).

Everything came in a cute pink drawstring bag, too - a really nice touch! You know it's a mom's design, because this keeps the tutu from getting wrinkled or damaged when it's stored. In addition to her birthday, this makes a fantastic dress-up piece. There are tons of ways for her to play with it, which I love.

Sugarbeez is a mom-owned and run Etsy business. Both she and her daughter have Celiac Spruce Disease, so 5% of all proceeds go www.celiaccentral.org. I love mompreneurs, especially those that give back! The great offerings from Sugarbeez are really a win-win; you're getting something fabulous for your daughter, supporting a mompreneur, and giving back. Awesome!!!

Take a Small Step with Marcal.

If you've been following along (hey, you should be!), you know that we went green with Lovie's birthday party this year. I was quite happy to incorporate some Marcal Small Steps products into the mix around our house, including at her birthday bash. =)

Overall, I love the Small Steps product line. They're saving trees left and right (over 21 million, as of this post!) and given how fast we burn through paper products here, I'm happy to use a more eco-friendly alternative. I was eager to see how the products would measure up; I like our brand-name, kushy toilet paper and paper towels!

I was pleasantly surprised. No, these aren't the softest, kushiest products you're going to find, but they hold their own pretty well. They're definitely not what you usually would think of when you think of recycled paper products (the icky, brown, scratchy paper towels, for instance...these don't resemble those at all!) I wouldn't use the tissues when I had a cold and my skin is extra-sensitive, but they're more than soft enough for daily use. I really thought the toilet paper would be scratchy, but it was surprisingly soft and just as good as what we usually use.

The only real issue I had was with the paper towels. They were a little stiff and tore horizontally more easily than they did vertically, even along the perforation. I really like the napkins - we've replaced a lot of our paper towel use with those. They're soft, absorbent, and don't have the tearing issues the paper towels have.

The Small Steps line is a great alternative to traditional paper products. They're better for the earth and in most cases, are just as good as most of the other products on the market.

You're invited...to Pingg!

For Lovie's big first birthday party, I decided to go green. Or rather, "conveniently green" - my term for the level of eco-friendly that I usually achieve. If it's reasonably convenient to go with an eco-friendly alternative, I prefer to. First thing's first: e-vites! Compliments of Pingg.com.

Pingg is awesome! This is not your typical e-vites website. And by "typical", I mean tacky. Because most of the free invites I found were ugly, tacky, or both! I was beyond thrilled to find Pingg. I couldn't believe their electronic invites and follow-up services were all free! For this review, I got to try the upgraded, ad-free version and one of the premium images. Honestly, though, they're not even necessary. Pingg's got a fantastic selection of 100% free stuff to work with!

The service is very cool to work with. It's completely integrated with Twitter & Facebook, so you can invite people via traditional email, but also update them via social media. You'll get a daily digest of RSVP activity (you can even see who's viewed the email invite, even if they haven't responded!). You can update your whole group or just selected parties. It gives you your continuously updated headcount and you can opt to send an automatic reminder before your event for the RSVP slackers.

It's just such a great service! The website is navigation-friendly and I love the bright, cheery colors. With the money and waste that go into paper invites, I'll be using Pingg from now on. I think it's fantastic and a great alternative to traditional invites. However, for more formal events or if you just like the idea of mailing out paper, they'll do it for $1.50 +postage per invite, which is a great price. Not only is it affordable, it's a huge time saver and a great way to keep your party attendance info organized.

The bottom line? Try Pingg! I love it!

Take Ame & Lulu on the trip...

Our recent trip to Washington, DC was the first time I've packed for a road trip that required entertainment for Lovie. It was the perfect opportunity to try out my Kimono Overnight Duffle by Ame & Lulu. We stuffed it full of toys and books for the trip. It even held a couple extra outfits and Lovie's blanket - it's quite roomy.

The first thing to mention about this line of bags is that they're fabulous looking! They've got great style. The second is that they're handmade in the US, which really shows in their product. Since using it the first time on that trip, it goes practically everywhere with us, and it doesn't even look like we've used it yet.

This bag is awesome for everything from packing up toys for a road trip, to extra clothes for a day trip, to lunch and bug spray for a day of hiking. It's quite durable and wipes clean pretty easily (baby wipes work well!). The zipper is smooth and a heavy enough gage that I've been able to stuff it pretty full and it still closes easily. I'm a huge fan of the hot pink/brown/white design, this is SO much better than any other duffle I've seen!

This is a great bag for moms, teens, or really any girl with great style. The whole Ame & Lulu line is really cute. It's especially useful for athletic women. Ame & Lulu has great products for tennis, yoga, golf, and even a line of bags for little girls. If your stylish little lady is into sports, the cases from Ame & Lulu are a welcome change from standard sports bags.

Want to win your own Overnight Duffle? Of course! Here's how to enter:

Diaper Stank, Be Gone!

The good thing about breastfeeding is that the poo really doesn't smell too bad. The bad thing is that eventually, they start eating solids, and that poo does really stink. So to that end, we've tried a few diaper disposal systems. Right now, we're using the Diaper Dekor, which is great for stank control!

We actually use the Dekor Plus, which is good for houses that only use one diaper pail and lends itself to less frequent emptying. Even when there's someone else here taking care of Lovie and she's in disposables all day, it doesn't need to be emptied at the end of the day. And with just using the occasional disposable and mostly cloth, it rarely gets completely full. Even with less-than-frequent emptying, the smell stays contained. (Though if you leave it for too long, as with any diaper pail, it's going to get a little funky).

My favorite feature, by far, is that it's hands-free. Step on the peddle, drop in the diaper, and you're done. Now, with lighter diapers, you kind of have to spike them in a little to get them through the little trap-door. The trap door is good, because it keeps the odors from coming out, but it's got a pretty strong spring hinge on it, so it takes a decent sized diaper to go through it. I've found that using a wipe to keep my hand clean while I push the lighter diapers through works well. For a quick demo of how it works, go here.

So, the hands-free thing (or mostly hands-free) is key. I also really like the refill system. I was leery of it at first, since refills=$, but theses are designed to be really economical (a refill pack is about $15). You fill the pail until it's full or you're ready to change it, then you just use the little cutter inside the pail to cut the bag off. Tie up the end, pull it down, and you're ready to start filling again. This way, you only use as much (or as little) liner as you need to (rather than twisting up inches and yards of refill bag and throwing away unused space) - very efficient. After a month and a half of use, we're still going strong with the first refill pack, so it's definitely economical.

I also love that there's nothing to take apart to empty it. No levers to flip, tops to pull off, or buckets to turn upside down; you just open the cabinet door on the bottom and empty it. you don't have to pick it up, move it, or do anything inconvenient at all. On a couple other pails we've tried, I had to pull them into the middle of the room and practically disassemble them to empty them. Then I had to touch entirely too much nasty stuff where the diapers had been, in order to add another bag. I absolutely prefer the Dekor's easy use features to anything else we've tried!

The Dekor is also so much better looking than any pail we've had. It's made of a white plastic that resists absorbing gross smells (ours has no odor), with gray trim. It's got a fairly sleek design (especially as diaper pails go!) is unobtrusive. It just blends into the background and you don't really notice it, which (in my humble opinion) is really what you want from your diaper pail, right?

A fun bonus? Once Lovie is out of diapers, our Dekor is headed to the basement to do kitty litter scoop duty. I love that it can be re-purposed when you're done with it! Not only is that eco-friendly, it's wallet-friendly, too.

Looking to use your Dekor with cloth diapers? Maybe just as a regular trash can (again, a great way to re-purpose it)? Here are directions on how turn it into a regular trash can (from the Diaper Dekor website FAQ section):

Lift the "second lid", or Frame, and squeeze the Tabs of the Insert toward the middle, this will make the Diaper Insert (with the two "trap doors") pop out. Put the Diaper Insert aside, in case you wish to use the pail as a diaper disposal system again in the future.

We're big fans of our Diaper Dekor. (I say "we" because really, @Dad_o is the one who empties it most!). Want your own? Win one! Here's how to enter:

Zee Fuh-min-ate-uh. =)

Ok, it's actually the FURminator. And it works on dog hair like zee Tuh-min-ate-uh.

Ok, ok, I'll stop making you suffer my lame humor now! Maybe. =)

We have two dogs. And a cat. And the three of them shed enough to make dust/fur bunnies that have bred into dust dinosaurs. Seriously, I think they might actually be forming a colony and preparing to stage a hostile takeover of our house. They're.just.awful!

The cat is short-haired, Lola is a cocker-spaniel, and Maggie is a golden-doodle. The FURminator worked beautifully on all three! We tried it in the medium size and it was fine for all of them (it probably helps that our cat, Harold, is 17 pounds and the size of a small dog.)

To really put it to the test, I used it on them as soon as they got home from the groomer (it happened to arrive on grooming day). I was blown away by the huge piles of pet hair I was throwing away, it was crazy! I still can't believe that they'd just been groomed and that much hair still came off. You could clothe a small family or stuff a mattress with the hair that came off (gross! but so good...=P).

And then something wonderful happened....the dust/fur dinosaurs died and turned back into bunnies. Granted, we haven't kept up with FURminator-ing them as often as we need to, and things get out of hand fast when we don't - but with consistent use, this thing really helps keep down the amount of pet hair that lands on the floors and furniture.

It's head-and-shoulders above any other deshedding tool we've used (and in the quest to kill the fur balls on the floors, we've tried quite a few!). The dogs also really seemed to enjoy it. Both laid down like they were getting puppy-spa treatments. We've tried some deshedding tools that seemed quite viscious, but this is really quite gentle. Even Harold the weirdo-cat enjoyed it!

Our dogs also really enjoyed the de-shedding treats. I'm not sure how much they did to keep the shedding down, since there's no real way to measure, but they sure do enjoy them! They also actually (strangely) enjoy being sprayed down with the FURminator Waterless DeShedding Shampoo. That stuff is great! Especially for the times between groomings....it's good stuff.

There's a whole line of products by FURminator designed to deshed your pets. I have struggled for so long with the amount of shedding these pets do - the FURminator is such awesome relief!

You want one, so win one! Here's how to enter:

Juice Beauty

Since I just blogged about baby skincare, it's probably a great time to talk about skincare for moms (and dads!). Juice Beauty offers a really unique line of all-organic skincare products made from juice concentrates.

I have had the pleasure of using the Organics to Clear Skin kit for the last month. It's super gentle and every bit as effective as the chemical-laden products I used to use. The kit comes with 30-day sample sizes of some of Juice Beauty's best products. It includes their Cleansing Gel, Blemish Clearing Serum, Green Apple Peel (for sensitive skin), Oil Free Moisturizer, and even a bamboo headband to keep hair off of your face while you're indulging in these fab products. (I'm actually wearing the headband and doing a Green Apple Peel while I blog!)

I love that the base for these products is fresh-squeezed juice. Not water, not who-knows-what; just pure, organic juice. And since fruit juices are full of antioxidants, vitamns, and other skin-healthy things, you know you're really using products that are good for you, your skin, and are eco-friendly.

To be skeptical at first was only natural; I've used the same skincare line for.ev.er! As soon as I tried everything, though, I was surprised at just how much I like it. The products don't smell like something I'd want to eat (of course, that's a personal preference thing), but it doesn't even matter - they work! And what's even better, is that they're all extremely gentle. I've got pretty sensitive skin, but these all treated me wonderfully (even the peel!).

The Cleansing Gel has a permanent spot in our shower. I love that it manages to get my skin clean and take away dead cells without the need for any kind of exfoliation. It's smooth and easy to use and the pump bottle is really convenient. (And since it's in the shower, the hubs has used it, too, and no complaints from him, so it must work!). Following the cleanser with the Oil-free Moisturizer is awesome. I love that it's really light and absorbs fast (I definitely don't have time to wait around for my moisturizer!).

I'm a huge fan of the Green Apple Peel for sensitive skin! It's fast, easy, and effective. It rubs on in less than a minute, stays on for about 10, then you just wash it off (I use a washcloth). I love to follow that with the Oil-free Moisturizer. It makes my skin noticeably brighter and makes it feel so fresh.

After my pregnancy, my skin wasn't quite right. To that end, the Blemish Clearing Serum has been a lifesaver! No more looking like a broken-out teenager for me! =D

I love Juice Beauty. I'm excited to try other products from their line and I think everything else will live up to how much I'm liking these products. If you're looking for natural skincare that's fantastic (celeb-worthy!), I'd totally recommend trying out Juice Beauty. =)

Strolling in Style (Guest Post by Dad-O)

Every time my parents see their granddaughter riding in her very sleek Micralite Toro, they can’t help but point out that when they were raising kids, a trusty old $20 umbrella stroller did the trick just fine.

I’m sure it did. But hey, times have changed.

And any time I have to steer Babe-O through a subway turnstile, jump a high curb, or navigate a crowd, I’m glad to be driving the Cadillac of strollers (or BMW, if you prefer). It’s got spinny front wheels that can be swapped for big fat ones on rough terrain. There are also some very decent shock absorbers that keep your little one (or laptop, or whatever) from bouncing around too much, either because you’re running over people’s feet at the store or just doing a bit of light off-roading with the stroller.

Aside from being maneuverable and comfy, the Micralite folds up small enough to make me feel silly about buying a seven passenger vehicle to accommodate an eight pound baby. It also does a nice little trick where it stands up straight and stays out of the way when it’s folded up. I like that.

As for things that Babe-O likes about her sweet ride, number one is probably the seat. It is super-comfortable for her and slides up and down, from upright see-stuff mode to a reclined, nap-worthy position. When we were in D.C. she took most of her naps in there. She would nod off upright and we’d just adjust the seat to cozy her up once she was asleep.

One thing to watch out for: folding/unfolding can be tricky. Monkeys and footballs came to mind when I first tried to unfold the thing, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a piece of cake. Just make sure to do a dry run or two before trying to operate the Mircralite under pressure with a baby in one hand.

Bottom line? If you’re considering a high-endish stroller, check this one out.

Sweet Knee For My Sweetie

I'm one of those moms that likes to go green when I can and minimize Lovie's exposure to nasty chemichals. If we can go organic, we do. I figure it's like this: yes, it costs more, but if we skip out on eating fast food garbage once or twice a month, the money side evens out pretty well (and we're that much healthier). I do the same with her bath products. So, I'm thrilled to tell you about Sweet Knee!

Skin is the body's largest organ, it absorbs lots of what you put on it. That makes it the perfect opportunity to start going green and minimizing exposure to nasty stuff. And it's such a small change to make! Swap out the chemical-laden stuff with organic, all-natural products, and you've just made a big dent in chemical exposure.

Kristy at Sweet Knee knows all about it. I can't recommend these products enough. She's not just making natural, organic products; she really knows about every single ingredient she's using. That's crucial, because all-natural does not equal safe or good. Arsenic is all-natural. That doesn't mean you want your baby being exposed to it, right?

So with the knowledge that not all naturals are created equal, Kristy formulates her products very carefully. Even some of the natural scents used in other organic products have their own properties that are good to be aware of when being used around babies. For instance, lavender, a common scent in baby items, is an estrogenic ingredient. With all the news lately about abnormal hormonal development, it's nice that she's being extra careful with what's going into her products (and thus into our babies).

Kristy gave me awesome explanations of the why's behind what goes into Sweet Knee products. Their company is small and family-run, and their customer service is awesome. If you have questions, I'd encourage you to contact her (she's great to work with!). Sweet Knee products only use ingredients that are hand-sourced, fair-trade, certified organic, and sustainable (music to my ears!). And if you'd like to know what's in each product, just look at the label; all the ingredients are disclosed. Sweet Knee never tests on animals, either (except the human kind!). And they'll even plant a tree for every Petite Baby Bag sold - I love that!

I tried the Petite Baby Bag, which has samples of Sweet Knee Rubbit Oil, Bubbly Soap, Oatmeal Cookie Bath, and Bun Glaze. I have been overwhelmed with how much I love each and every one of these products! First, this is the perfect way to try Sweet Knee. These aren't typical samples, either - we are still using ours and it's been two months! The Bubbly Soap is used every day in Lovie's bath, and it's not even half-gone yet.

The Bubbly Soap is probably my favorite product. It's free of surfectants and preservatives and comprised of castille soap; coconut, olive, and jojoba oils; aloe vera; rosemary extract; and an essential oil blend of mandarin and calendula. It smells sooo good! And unlike the chemical baby soaps found in big-box stores, I can feel good taking a deep whiff of my squeaky-clean Lovie. Yum! Oh, and one or two pumps is plenty for her bath (we just hand-apply it). She also loves to look at the cute characters on the bottles. =)

The Oatmeal Cookie Bath is great for giving your little one a soak in the tub. We do bath time religiously every night. It's part of her routine and signals that it's almost bedtime. But she does't always need to be scrubbed. On those nights, we just drop the Oatmeal Cookie Bath satchel in her bath water and let her play away. It smells divine and conditions her skin. It's especially great for newborns who don't really get dirty, but still need to be bathed.

The Rubbit Oil is calendula oil, free of any emulsifiers. It may separate, so you just have to shake it up before applying it. It absorbs pretty quickly and makes skin super soft. My favorite use is to pump a drop into Lovie's bath if her skin is getting dry. A little goes a long way, and it makes her delightfully soft. Not having to bother with slathering lotion on after each bath is great!

Bun Glaze is the Sweet Knee product that started it all. This wonderful, zinc-free diaper rash treatment is amazing! Lovie has never really had a full-blown diaper rash. She's gotten a bit red from time to time, but we've actually never bought a tube of diaper rash cream. Since we've started cloth diapering, it's been even more rare. The one time she did start to get a bit red and spotty, I was relieved to have the Bun Glaze. No chemicals, no nasties. Just good stuff to make her feel better. And since it's zinc-free, it's safe for use with cloth diapers. That's awesome!

I love the packaging Kristy uses, too. Everything about Sweet Knee is so carefully thought out and chosen. The Rubbit Oil and Bun Glaze both come in cute pump bottles. The tops of the pumps are broad, making one-handed use a breeze. And the way they're shaped - rounded, no sharp edges - you can drizzle them right on baby's skin. With the Bun Glaze, it can actually be applied without having to touch it at all! Mama likes. =)

The characters on the packaging are also super cute, as is the bag the Petite Baby Bag comes in. You can get it with pink, blue, or green ribbon (we like the green, despite my love for pink!). They'll even ship it to your destination if you're travelling and would like to have it waiting for you when you arrive. Did I mention that I just absolutely love this company?!

You want to win your own Petite Baby Bag! You do, trust me. ;D Here's how to enter:
