Lact-ivate the Bat Signal, Girls!

If you've been on Twitter recently and you follow the breastfeeding conversation, you're probably aware of the big brouhaha about covering versus not covering while breastfeeding.

It was spurned by a blog post that basically came out and said, "Breastfeeding moms: Why can't you cover up?" Actually, that was even the title of the post, verbatim.

Trust me, I see the bazillion different reasons why that title and the point of the post are just.so.wrong. I do. But this isn't about that post, or it's author (which is why I'm not linking or citing, because that's not what this is about). This is about the larger conversation about breastfeeding.

Honestly, it can't even always be called a conversation. Too often, it derails into heated, reactionary, emotional words that are hostile to all involved.

To all involved; including the ones speaking (or typing, as it were).

If we are going to make progress in the world of breastfeeding and give it a makeover, a la Best for Babes, the arguing and hostility has got to STOP.

It seems as though every time someone tweets something negative about breastfeeding, there are people standing ready to light the torches and throw up the Bat signal: come on, let's get 'em, unleash the fury of the lactivists!

I'm not seeing positive progress from it, are you?

And to be clear: I'm not using the term 'lactivist' in anything close to a derogatory manner. I, myself, am a lactivist.

I firmly believe in first giving the benefit of the doubt to those disparaging breastfeeding. I speak from experience: had you asked me even three years ago if I planned to breastfeed, I would've given you a staunch "hell no, that's gross!".

I have been the uninformed, poorly enculturated person uttering those words. I had no concept of their weight or implications; I only understood how they related to me and my situation.

Luckily, my feelings were met with respect, acceptance, and education. And that led to me breastfeeding.

If I'd been attacked and torn down for how I felt, I would have dug in further and written off breastfeeding all together. I would have not breastfed on principle, based on that kind of reaction.

Yes, there are those who say negative things about breastfeeding just to be inflammatory. I don't think I'm going to change the attitude of someone who's coming to the table with that intent, so I don't engage with them. Engaging is what they're after, and doing so only encourages the bad behavior.

But for those who speak from ignorance, misinformation, or both: we are doing the breastfeeding community at large a disservice by meeting them with hostility and negativity.

First, we need to band together in a positive way in order to promote our cause. Supporting each other should be our first step in supporting others. In-fighting never made progress for any group.

We must be open to the conversation about breastfeeding. The nonjudgmental, open, respectful conversation. If we can't have a civil discussion about it, we're certainly not going to convince anyone that they should support us and our cause. That means listening to some things that we probably don't want to hear ("breastfeeding is gross!" for instance), and not jumping the gun on a reactionary response.

That said, some will see our side and some won't. And that's ok, too. Every other mother in my family formula fed their babies, and yet we still manage to be friendly and even love one another! It's ok to agree to disagree, and it's completely possible to do so respectfully and even with acceptance for others' choices.

In light of all of this, I pledge to...

1...support the other members of the breastfeeding community.

2....support the right of every parent to choose how to feed their child without facing judgment or hostility.

3....behave in a manner that is civil and respectful toward others, promoting the education and understanding that will further this cause.

Are you with me?

Fluffy Stuff: sloomb (part two!)

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Brand: sloomb (aka: sustainablebabyish) (http://sloomb.com)

Type: fitted

Closure: snaps

Cost: $26

Adjustability: snaps at the waist; leg elastics are fixed

Size Range: x-small, small, medium, large

Materials: organic cotton-bamboo fleece with the jersey side out

Quality: Excellent! These are work-horse diapers. We have two and Lovie wears them 3-4 nights/week, which means they get washed and worn a lot. The fabrics are really thick and sturdy and most importantly, soft!

Laundry Tabs: n/a

Laundering: sloomb recommends a cold rinse and hot wash, which is how we roll around here with the cloth diaper laundry. ;) Of course, line drying is best, but since it's snowing/raining/sleeting and generally unpleasant here, I've been using the dryer (with dryer balls, which are also recommended).

The leg elastics are holding up great to being run through the dryer (I'll switch to line drying when the weather breaks). The dye does lose a little brightness and depth of color over the washings, but nothing major (and more importantly, the dye never leached on to anything else! definitely a good thing!).

Inserts: Here's where the doublers come in! Lovie isn't a heavy wetter, and the sustainablebabyish fitteds come with snap-in soakers. So, if you have a heavy wetter, you can tuck it into the soaker and you'll be fully protected (I can't imagine that a babe could wet through the soaker, a doubler, and the fitted!). For us, it means that we can get away with swapping the soaker for a doubler and get an extra wear out of the fitted itself. Both the snap-in soakers and the doublers are super-absorbent. The doubler is a single piece, while the snap-in soaker is two pieces, serged at the top where the snaps are. Having the layers separated into two larger layers keeps the drying time down (a major plus!).

Fit: Great fit! True-to-size for what the sloomb sizing guide says, too. Lovie has lots of room to grow in hers. I like that the snaps are well-placed to allow these to have a snug fit on a wide variety of sizes, too.

Trim Factor: When Lovie's just in the fitted - no soaker or doubler - it's got a super trim profile. Adding in the soaker doesn't add a huge amount of bulk, but with the soaker and a doubler, it starts bulking up (especially between the legs). These are pretty trim, overall, though, depending on what kind of a cover you use with them.

Performance: These are in our top-three favorites list for overnight. We've never had a leak in them and they're great at wicking away moisture from Lovie's skin. I like the sloomb wool pants over them, or a Bummis cover also fits well. Since they're organic, I choose them over most of the other night-friendly diapers we have, because she's wearing them for such long stretches. No nasty chemicals sitting on her skin for 12+ hours = Happy Mommy. =) [Yes...we're lucky, she sleeps that long!]

Dad-Factor: Since there are a lot of snaps at the waist, even if he doesn't quite do it the way I do, he still manages to get pretty close on the right fit (I hope that makes sense! Frequent snap placement = finer sizing adjustments). Dad-approved!

Overall: I absolutely looove everything we've tried from sloomb!! I can't say enough good things. It's a company with great ethics that's producing extremely high-quality cloth diapering products. The sbish fitteds are fantastic (love the colors!) and they're a staple in our stash. They've held up well and I expect that these will last well beyond Lovie's potty learning. :)

BONUS!! You can win a pair of interlock OR knit wool longies! Check out my review of sloomb longies to enter!

DOUBLE BONUS!! sloomb is offering MMH readers a special 15% discount! (excludes interlock pre-orders & snapless multi 6 packs) - good through 2/10! Enter code HAPPY15

Fluffy Stuff: Sloomb

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Brand: sloomb (aka: sustainablebabyish) (http://sloomb.com)

Type: wool pants (great to cover any fitted or over any diaper/underwear at all!)

Closure: elastic waist

Cost: $64

Adjustability: n/a

Size Range: x-small, small, medium, medium-long, large

Materials: 95% certified organic merino wool; 5% lycra. Organically felted using citrus and dyed in an oko-tex certified environment (basically, all the highest quality materials, which also happen to be the very safest you can get).

Quality: Ah-mazing! Seriously, these are nicer than any of Lovie's other pants (or really, mine & her dad's, too!). These are hand-made and it shows. =)

Laundry Tabs: n/a

Laundering: This is where the Pure Solid Lanolin comes in. sloomb products don't come pre-lanolized, so you'll probably want to do that before you use any of their wool items. Most wool users lanolize, though some choose to never use lanolin. It's a personal preference. Lanolin naturally occurs in wool, it's what helps it stay water-resistant.

To lanolize (it's super easy!), just follow these instructions for lanolizing that are provided on the sloomb site. I recommend using wool wash over baby shampoo, because baby shampoo can actually have some nasty chemicals in it.

Other than lanolizing, these should be hand-washed as needed and laid flat to dry. I wash mine on the delicate ("hand-wash") cycle on my front-loader and lay them flat to dry, and that's worked well for me. Wool isn't as scary to care for as it sounds!

Inserts: n/a

Fit: These are pretty true-to-size based on the sizing info on the sloomb website. They've got a nice little stretch/give to them, too, so they're growing well with her. And of course, they fit over the sloomb fitteds perfectly!

Trim Factor: n/a

Performance: Fantastic!! Wool is the golden standard of cloth diapering because it's natural, sometimes organic, and performs SO well. It helps to regulate body temperature (it's very breathable) and is naturally moisture-resistant. We've never had a leak in these and I'm not sure that we ever will! These are great for daytime play or as PJ pants (over a sloomb fitted) at night. They're really made to be worn and played in. We've had everything from poo to ketchup on ours, and they've always come clean. They can take some serious scrubbing!

Dad-Factor: No brainer! Put the baby in a fitted, put the pants on. No keeping the cover straight or getting it just right.

Overall: Love! These have been one of my very favorite cloth diapering finds. These are my "no worry" pants: no nasty chemicals, organic materials, no leaks, and they're made to be played in. They're cozy and comfy, too (which has led to several stints as PJ pants, in addition to daytime wear!). I was a little intimidated by the whole lanolizing and "hand-wash only" care recommendations, but it was much ado about nothing. They get tossed in the washer on the delicate cycle, it's really quite easy.

And the best part? The colors! Ooooh, the colors. All the sloomb products are gorgeous. We got these pants in Lotus, a rich, beautiful pink. Try one and you'll be hooked!

I'm also a huge fan of sloomb as a company. In order to offset the energy that creating and caring for a sloomb diaper requires, they have partnered with Trees for the Future for one diaper-one tree. You buy a diaper and one tree is planted in Southeast Asia. Pretty cool.

BONUS!! You can win a pair of interlock OR knit wool longies! Here's how to enter:
  • Leave ONE comment on this post and let us know that you follow both @sloomb and @HappyMomAmy on Twitter. You must ALSO let us know if you'd like knit or interlock, and what color you'd pick if you won - check out the knit colors, they're different from the interlock line.
Open WORLDWIDE! Giveaway runs 1/24-2/12/10, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

DOUBLE BONUS!! sloomb is offering MMH readers a special 15% discount! (excludes interlock pre-orders & snapless multi 6 packs) - good through 2/10! - Check out my review of s'bish fitteds for details!

Ick.

There's really no better word to title this post!

It's been an icky week here. @Dad_o was in Florida for business from Sunday afternoon until late Tuesday night, so Lovie and I flew solo for a few days. I'm thinking he brought something back, because...

...ew.

Let me back it up for a second, though. My dad had a partial knee replacement on Tuesday (it went well!), so we were heading to see him when he got home on Thursday evening.

Wednesday night, @Dad_o was sick. Pukey-poopy gross sick. I figured it was travel-related or stress and left it at that. He was better by dinner time on Thursday, so we went to go visit my dad, anyway.

When it was about time to head for the drive home - an hour - I felt sick. Enter: more puke. Lots. About 10 hours' worth, actually.

Obviously, @Dad_o had to stay home with us on Friday, there was no way I could handle the kid on my own. Good thing he did...'cause she joined the barf-fest after breakfast on Friday.

Aaaaand here we are Sunday, all of about 7 hours since the last puke. @Dad_o was sick again Saturday, and Lovie picked up again today. Here's hoping this thing doesn't chase me down again tomorrow...

It's been an icky week here! But Monday starts a new week, which will bring the last few cloth diaper posts, as well as a few other fun reviews!

Here's to the new week!

Fluff-Friendly: Sweet Pickles

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Store: Sweet Pickles (http://mysweetpickles.com/)

Selection: Cloth diapers & accessories, baby care, gently used diapers, gifts & natural lifestyle products

Diaper brands: Thirsties, bumGenius, Fuzzi Bunz, Imse Vimse, Happy Heiny's, Tiny Tush, Soft Bums, Rocky Mountain Diapers

Registry option: yes

Branding: very pink & girly, cute

Website: Nice looking website with a good amount of informational materials and plenty of photos to go around. There are a few spots where images don't display quite right, but it's nothing that interferes with the site's function or getting the info you're looking for. The diaper categories are very well sorted out and broken down, which expedites finding things and makes the site that much easier to use. I also like the short descriptions she puts in each category, that makes shopping and learning about the diapers a more seamless operation (especially great for cloth diaper newbies!).

The goods: I ordered a Heiny Hugger Sherpa Fitted, Tiny Tush one-size fitted, and a Rocky Mountain one-size.

Shipping: $5 flat rate shipping; free shipping for orders over $75. Shipping to the United States Only.

Perks:

  • There's a special showcase for local products originating in Minnesota and Wisconsin, which is a cool and unique feature. (And I had no idea how much cloth diapering stuff came from there!)
  • Gently used diapers are available, which is always wallet-friendly. :)
  • Free cloth diapering classes & local consignment program are available, too (check it out if you're in the area!).
  • The Try Cloth program offers users a return-friendly way to try out cloth diapering (also offers a taste of using a diaper service...check it out!).
Overall: This is one of the most locally focused cloth diapering stores I've reviewed, and I think that's awesome! Sweet Pickles offers the best of both worlds: an online storefront with a hometown interest. The diaper brands offered are limited, but they're all brands that are carefully chosen to provide enough variety for most needs. There's a lot of good info available on the site, too. Katrina is knowledgeable and is willing to share, so feel free to pick her brain, too!

DOUBLE BONUS! Sweet Pickles is offering TWO giveaways! We're still sticking to the single-entry format, though - don't worry! =)
  • Giveaway #1: Soft Bums basic pack (one of my fave diapers!)
  • Giveaway #2: Thirsties Duo diaper (the newest diaper by Thirsties!)
Here's how to enter:
  • Leave ONE comment on this post and let us know what diaper brand you'd like to see Katrina offer in her store, that's not already sold there. You must follow this site via email to win (subscribe via Feedburner on the right, if you don't already).
Giveaway runs 1/15-2/5/10, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Fluff-Friendly: Eco Bebe Boutique

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Store: Eco Bebe Boutique (http://www.ecobebeboutique.com/) (Canadian cloth diaperers, this one's for you!)

Selection: Cloth diapers & accessories, natural baby & mom care items, laundry supplies

Diaper brands: AMP, Baby Kanga, Bamboo Baby, Berry Plush, bumGenius, Bummis, Dri-Wrap, Econobum, Flip, Fuzzi Bunz, GAD, GroBaby, Heiny Huggers, Knickernappies, Monkey Doodlez, Sugar Peas, Sweetpea Diapers, Thirsties, Urban Fluff, Wonder Wraps

Registry option: yes

Branding: love. Eco Bebe Boutique is proof that it's possible to have beautiful, grown-up branding and still sell products for the little ones.

Website: The website is clean, intuitive, and gorgeous. Everything displays correctly and it's easy on the eyes (no clutter). I would like to see more in the way of shopping options (by brand, for instance), though. There's a great "Cloth Diapering 101" section, too. While many cloth diaper stores offer this info, this is one of the best I've seen and is definitely worth reading. I like the unique testimonials page, too. Rather than have rave after rave about the store, it's a place for moms to share what led them to cloth diapering. I think that's a fantastic idea, one that is especially valuable to site visitors who are new to cloth diapering. The Knowledge Center section is also excellent. US users should note that prices are in Canadian dollars.

The goods: I ordered a Bamboozle fitted, a GAD pocket, and a Happy Heiny's Hemp Stuffins.

Shipping: Flat-rate shipping of $6.95 CDN to urban areas ($8.95 to the US). Free on orders over $149 (pre-tax).

Perks:

  • Eco Bebe Boutique is one of the best sites I've seen for well-written, reliable info on cloth diapering.
  • It's a site I enjoyed shopping on. It works well and the design is really pleasing.
  • A handful of lesser known and less widely available diaper brands are sold here, which is nice.
Overall: There's a really well-balanced selection of diaper style and brands available at Eco Bebe Boutique. The inventory really spans the entire range of wants and needs a cloth diapering family might have, from the more expensive, higher-end diapers, to the most budget-friendly options possible, and everything in between. The same goes for the diaper styles offered: everything from the traditional all-in-ones and pockets to the newer hybrid systems are available. This store is an especially excellent resource for the Canadian cloth diaperers out there. I thing Eco Bebe Boutique has struck just the right balance with the range of diapers and price points that are offered, and they've done it in a really elegant way!

Fluffy Laundry: Mio Fresh Nappy Cleanser

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

One of the main worries over cloth diaper laundering is how to get them really clean. Germ-killing clean. Most cloth diaper detergents work to clean the diapers, but very few actually sanitize them. Of course, methods of sanitizing like bleach are often discouraged; it's hard on the diapers and more importantly, it's hard on your baby's skin.

All of this is why I like Bambino Mio's Mio Fresh Nappy Cleanser.

Mio Fresh is a rare combination of a detergent made specifically for cloth diapers that's also antibacterial. It's a UK-made product that's becoming more widely available here in the US. Its bleaching agent (the one that makes it antibacterial) is oxygen-based, so this detergent is compatible with most diaper brands' care instructions. It's chlorine free and 100% biodegradable, too. I really like it!

I use Mio Fresh for everything from diapers to towels and sheets. I don't use it on every load, though. The label warns that continued use can fade colored diapers, so I use it just a few times a week. I think of it as more of a booster than an every day wash.

I've found that when our water softener is going to need salt (and our water gets harder), it takes more Mio Fresh than is recommended (but that's to be expected with hard water). Other than that, I've found it works really well. I haven't had any fading at all, in any of my diapers, either.

Overall, I'm really happy with it. It doesn't contain any of the stuff I worry about in detergents (enzymes, perfumes, chlorine, optical brighteners) and it's still antibacterial: win-win! I think this is one of the best products in the Bambino Mio line, without a doubt. It's also pretty economical, at about $11 for a 50-load jar (plastic jar, comes with a scoop). (It's available at New Baby Products, too, just click the link in the header.)

Transparency.

Perhaps you've got the inside track here and are aware, and perhaps not: I'm relaunching this site! It's still a while down the road, as I'm not even entirely sure of what the new version is going to look like - just that it's going to kick ass.

One of my biggest intentions and main focuses with the new site is going to be transparency. I want to get to know all of you better, and to do that, I need to allow you to know me. The real me, not the avatar and persona that you pick up from reading product reviews on this site.

The new site will still have reviews and giveaways. I really do enjoy writing about products and sharing them, and I think you enjoy winning them, too! ;P But there's going to be a lot more than just reviews/giveaways....I'm just not quite sure of what "more" looks like just yet.

I want to be as open and transparent as possible with the new site. I'm trying to mitigate my fear of internet creepos and protecting my privacy and the privacy of my family, with my desire to share much, much more openly. I still haven't figured out exactly how to balance the two (any suggestions are welcome!).

You should also know more about me. I'll start with this post. My name is Amy and I...
  • ...swear (a lot! too much. Lovie's first word may have been mother, but I won't tell you what followed it...;P). Point being, the new site might [ahem, will] have some more swears than this one does. I try to keep it clean in writing, but I'm now balancing that with trying to keep it real. Yo. =D
  • ...like watching mindless celebrity news at night while @Dad_o gives the kid her bath (yes, it's a trashy habit, just like swearing, but I'm being honest here. So, random fact, just for you.)
  • ...I really am this semi-crunchy granola-y mom who employs natural parenting and living to most aspects of our life, assuming it's not radically inconvenient (the toilet water is one-time use only in this house, thankyouverymuch).
  • ...am a Happy Mom, yes. But I'm also Snarky Mom, sometimes Pissed Off Mom, occasionally Whiney Mom, and often Sarcastic, Funny Mom. The list goes on, and you'll get to know it better as the new site launches. What you should know now, though, is that I believe it's 100% possible to be Happy in my role as Mom, and still simultaneously exist in all those other ways.
So, the new site will involve typing more and backspacing less. I hope you'll all come with me and enjoy it. For those of you who are offended by any (or all, lol) of the above: there are so many blogs out there that I'm sure one will fit just like your favorite t-shirt. I'm not looking to make any enemies or have any fights over this, I'd rather make new friends.

Thoughts? Reactions? Suggestions? Judgmental, troll-y comments? Let loose...

Fluff-Friendly: Growing Green Bums

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Store: Growing Green Bums (http://growinggreenbums.com/)

Selection: Cloth diapers & accessories (including EC & potty learning supplies!), baby wearing, natural baby & mom items, natural parenting items, wooden toys,

Diaper brands: bumGenius, Chinese Cotton prefolds, Econobum, GroBaby, Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heiny's, Hemp Babies, loveybums, Thirsties, Tiny Tush

Registry option: yes

Branding: love it! if I had a store, this is probably what it would look like. Not too babyish, earthy (but light) colors, very classic looking. A+!

Website: The website functions well and is designed for a smooth user experience. Things display correctly and are tidy and organized. The categories are broken down well (and have sub-categories, too), which makes it easy to find what you're after. The one tiny change I would make is putting the Shipping info and Store Policies up in the 'store info' menu, instead of just down in the footer.

There's also a Growing Green Bums blog that's equally well designed. My only concern with that is that the font in the posts is on the small side. Other than that, everything about this site functions exactly how it's supposed to. It's intuitive and I really enjoyed shopping on it!

The goods: I ordered a Tiny Tush Elite one-size, Thirsties Fab Wipes, Northern Essence Foaming Wipes Solution, 6 Chinese Prefolds, a Snappi, and some Booty Cubes.

Shipping: $5 flat rate shipping on orders under $50, Free shipping on orders $50 and over to the lower 48 states & APO/FPO addresses. International shipping is available, just email to inquire.

Perks:

  • The site design. I know it's not exactly in the same vein as other perks I've mentioned, but shopping on a really solid website is a perk to me. (Yep, I'm a geek. =)
  • Free samples! Every order is eligible for a free sample, plus you can buy samples for very low rates, too, if you're so inclined.
  • "Growing Green Bums" isn't just the name of her store; it's a way of life. Marissa tries to run an eco-friendly business. The website is even powered by wind!
Overall: Growing Green Bums is one of my very favorite cloth diapering stores. Marissa sells a nice selection of diapers, most of which I've tried personally and would buy again (so no duds to choose from!). Her selection isn't too small or large - it's a great fit for someone new to cloth or who is a veteran buying one of the more popular brands (I'd love to see the EC category expanded, *wink*). Her store isn't overwhelming, where a lot of cloth diapering stores are, so that's a perk. There's also a lot of solid info available from the site, or from Marissa herself. Marissa is exuberant and is so enthusiastic about cloth diapering! She's fun to work with and is a great resource for her customers.

BONUS! Growing Green Bums is giving away a 45/90 load bag of Rockin Green Soap in Monkey Snacks! Both Marissa and I are fans of this detergent, it's great! Here's how to enter:
Giveaway runs 1/11-1/31/09, 11:59pm EST. Good luck!

Fluff-Friendly: Eaton Family Eco Babies

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Store: Eaton Family Eco Babies (http://ecobabies.ca/) Canadian friends, this one's for you! =)

Selection: diapers & accessories, baby wearing, baby items, Sigg bottles & accessories, nursing products, toys, things for mom

Diaper brands: Anne Marie Padorie, Bummis, Baby Kanga, Berry Plush, Bum Genius, Happy Heiny's, Baboozle, Flip Diapers

Registry option: no

Branding: very gender neutral & cute

Website: The website is pretty average as far as small to medium sized cloth diaper retailers go. There's nothing flashy, but it's also really well organized and easy to look at. This is a simple and to-the-point site, and that's well appreciated here! Categories are intuitive and it's easy to shop there.

The Cloth Basics part of the site is short and to the point, and lets you know just what you need to get started in cloth - I think it's great! Many similar guides get lost in the details, so this straightforward list is a welcome change.

The goods: I ordered a Happy Heinys OneSize, an AMP Duo Pocket, and an AMP bamboo insert.

Shipping: shipping on orders over $75 to Canada and $100 for USA. Other orders with flat shipping: $7.50 to Canada and $12.50 to USA. (Note: all prices in Candian $$$).

Perks:

  • Eco Babies offers a diaper rental program. They'll work with you to figure out what you should try, put it together, and let you give it a spin. That is awesome. It takes a lot of the worry and stress out of getting into cloth diapering (not to mention sparing the expense of purchasing diapers that don't work out!).
  • Family-owned business with a cloth diapering savvy mom at the helm. =)
Overall: Canadian shoppers, check Eco Babies out! (And those of us in the US are certainly welcome, too!) There's an ample selection and knowledge base available on the site and they're really easy to work with. Kristen knows her stuff and is keeping up with the ever-changing cloth diaper market. As products evolve and new ones come out, her inventory is changing to keep only the best diapers in stock. If you have questions about what you're buying, or how two diapers compare (I did!), she's a fantastic resource!

Got Water?

Fluffy Stuff: Bambino Mio

The MMH Great Cloth Diapering Event, brought to you by New Baby Products

Product Reviewed: Mio Trial (includes a cover, prefold, and biodegradable liner)

Type: prefold & covers system

Closure: velcro

Cost: about $20 for the Mio Trial (MioSoft cover + Nappy + biodegradable liner)

Adjustability: just the Velcro waist closure

Size Range: Newborn, Small, Medium, Large

Materials: cotton-blend laminated cover; prefolds are 100% cotton

Quality: These prefolds are extremely high quality. The weave is tight and they're super absorbent. Cover quality is average.

Laundry Tabs: No. Having laundry tabs on Velcro and Velcro-style closures is basically an industry standard for cloth diapers, so I think it's a real disadvantage that these covers don't have them.

Laundering: The prefolds are super easy to care for! And since they're not a synthetic fabric, they wash well. As for the covers: I put them in the washer with the velcro attached at the waist. That's fine, but they sometimes come undone and "grab" other diaper covers and inserts. I'd also like to be able to put them in flat, as opposed to closed. Other than that, the covers dry extremely fast and the prefolds are great!

Inserts: Not inserts, per se; this is a prefold system. Prefolds are flat rectangles of absorbent material (often cotton) that have to be folded into various shapes, depending on how you prefer to use them. Bambino Mio includes great instructions on how to fold a few different ways, diagrams included.

Fit: These are sized generously, so keep that in mind if you're ordering. I wish the Velcro tabs overlapped, that would help in adjusting the fit even further. Other than that, they get the job done over the prefolds.

Trim Factor: Prefolds are notorious in the world of cloth diapers for being one of the least trim options. So, these are quite a bit more bulky than some of the other diaper styles you could use (pockets, for instance).

Performance: The prefolds are ultra-absorbent! No extra stuffing needed. The covers perform fine, too. This is a work-horse system and these prefolds will almost certainly last through multiple babies. :)

Dad-Factor: Prefolds are intimidating even for some experienced cloth diaperers. They're really not hard to use, though, once you get the hang of it (just like most other cloth diapers, in that respect). That said, though: if the dad in your life is pro-fluff and open to it, give it a try - but you may have to ease him in with an easier system before you get to the prefolds.

Overall: Bambino Mio is one of the most budget-friendly diapering options out there, by far. So, if that's your primary concern, they're definitely worth trying out! I think there are definitely superior covers out there, though (which is too bad, because the Bambino Mio ones come in cute patterns!). The prefolds equal or surpass any of the DSQ (Diaper Service Quality) prefolds I've tried from other makers. If you're new to using prefolds, the instructions/diagrams these come with are really user-friendly. At around $20 for a Mio Trial, this is a great way to ease into using prefolds with covers.

Girl, WHERE have you BEEN?!

Yeah, I've been wondering that myself, lately. The last quarter of 2009 and beginning of 2010 have been a doozy...

Over the last few months, a lot has gone on. It's been crazy busy and extremely trying at times, but it seems to be winding down. There's been travel, sickness, holidays, visitors, my birthday, more holidays, and finally, the death of my grandfather last week.

I've got to say, I'm not sorry to see 2009 go. In fact, I'm welcoming 2010 with open arms.

I don't want to write off 2009, because it wasn't all bad...but the tail end was a whirlwind I don't care to repeat. It's all taken its toll, which is evident in the fact that both my ears are infected, with a sinus infection and a cough, to boot. The end of 2009 was too much, even for my maternal immunity (luckily, I seem to be the only sick one in the house....small favors!).

Last year is over and I've got my antibiotics, and things are starting to look up. I was super flattered to be mentioned on this Top Ten Blogs list in Amanda's farewell post at The Mom Crowd. It reminded me to keep my chin up and stay positive and quit crabbing - something I've been doing entirely too often over the past couple of months.

I'm excited to get back to all of you and get back to Twitter (it seems like it's been a month since I've been on for more than a couple minutes! I'm suffering withdrawl!). In light of the fact that the events of late December, both good and bad, kept me from the interwebs, I'm extending all the giveaways by 2 weeks (yay!). Go get yourself entered to win some cloth diapers or that awesome Primo water cooler! And look for a whole slew of "catch up" posts to come...

Thanks for sticking with me. Ducking into social media now and then for support over the last few weeks, especially, has kept me sane. Mostly. ;D
